CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Physician Received Prestigious Award

SAN ANTONIO, TX (December 8, 2020) – CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is proud to announce that Ian M. Thompson, Jr., M.D. will receive the Ramon Guiteras Award from the American Urological Association (AUA). This award is presented annually to an individual for outstanding contributions to the art and science of urology and is named after the pioneering surgeon who founded the AUA and is the highest award of the AUA. Dr. Ian M. Thompson, Jr. is being recognized for his outstanding leadership and contributions in clinical trials and treatment of urological cancers.

Dr. Thompson currently serves as president and chief development officer of the Friends of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Foundation and The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation. Prior to this role, Dr. Thompson served as President at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center and Vice President of Oncology for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and helped lead the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He currently practices urology and urologic oncology.

Dr. Thompson has also served as the principal investigator of the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) since its inception in 1992; in this study of 18,882 men followed for over 25 years, finasteride, a drug used for treatment of symptoms of prostate enlargement or male pattern baldness, reduced the risk of prostate cancer by 25%. He currently serves on the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute and previously served as President of the Society of Urologic Oncology and President of the American Board of Urology.
