Teodora

Lifelong artist, Mario Garcia, has transformed Poe Middle School’s art department since he began teaching there in 2020. In 2023, Garcia’s students took home “Best in Show” at the UIL Awards. This past year, Garcia pushed his students to submit designs for CowParade. The students voted for eighth-grader Emely Mejia’s design, Teodora. Garcia, Mejia, and student Genevieve Fernandez spent the next few months bringing the 2D design to life.

Teodora, meaning “God’s Gift”, features a blend of Latin American art styles, with skeletal elements that honor Mexico’s Día de los Muertos celebration, an Aztec sun, and multiple brightly colored indigenous-inspired patterns.

“CowParade is a celebration of creativity and culture, and I’m honored to have my work be part of something that brings so much joy to the community,” said Emily Mejia.
